“CODA” (2012)
“A child of deaf adult, often known by the acronym "coda", is a person who was raised by one or more Deaf parents or guardians.” -
As a hearing child born to deaf adults, I was raised in the Deaf culture and grew up in a hearing world. Studying Multimedia at the University of The Arts in Philadelphia, I created a video and audio installation inspired by my experience as a “CODA” for my senior thesis presentation. My thesis explored the dynamic of a bicultural family in the modern day using home-video footage to tell a story of CODA. In a collaborative fashion, this project was compiled with home video footage shot on VHS by my father, James Goodwin, that I digitally converted, edited and mixed audio for a distorted landscape representing the disconnection between the Deaf and hearing world.
